SUMMARY:The Judiciary\, the Rule of Law\, & Civil Justice in Ukraine: A Judicial Education Perspective
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join a webinar on The Judiciary\, the Rule of Law\, & Civil Justice in Ukraine: A Judicial Education Perspective hosted by the Law & Economics Center at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. \nDate: Tuesday\, April 26\, 2022\nTime: 12:00 – 1:00 PM EDT \nRegister Here: https://web.cvent.com/event/9e724fea-a093-42b5-b462-082d09e088bd/summary \nWhat is the state of the judiciary in Ukraine and why should we understand it? Our panelists will answer these questions and more. \nU.S. federal and state judges regularly teach\, mentor\, and act as ambassadors throughout the world. They educate judges in other countries about the Rule of Law\, judicial independence\, judicial ethics\, civil justice\, and other unique aspects of the American judiciary system. Their first-hand experiences offer a perspective of foreign judiciaries up close. \nOur panelists for this LEC webinar are three U.S. federal judges who have spent considerable time in Ukraine as observers of its judiciary and as instructors to Ukrainian judges. They will reflect on their experiences\, provide their perspectives\, and discuss how the judiciary is coping with the present-day conflict—sharing stories of Ukrainian judges who have swapped their judicial robes for fatigues. \nFor questions about the event\, please contact Dominic Scavuzzo at dscavuzz@gmu.edu or 703.993.8388.

SUMMARY:The Cardozo/Scalia Law Deans Leadership Academy
DESCRIPTION:A free how-to-succeed playbook for new law school deans and prospective deans\, complete with lessons from beyond legal education. Scalia Law and Cardozo Law are co-sponsoring the virtual conference. \nThe Deans Leadership Academy was created to give new and prospective law school deans a jump-start in acquiring the skills necessary to lead successfully. The early months are the time to set your leadership agenda and assess your team. There are critical decisions to make\, and retaining consultants for expert guidance may not always be economically feasible. The interview process for new deans rarely provides real insight into an institution as complex as a law school. \nIn this program\, which is free\, you will learn from consultants who will provide expert guidance. We focus on essential lessons that current deans say they wish they had learned from the get-go. It is designed to remove some of the mystery of the “do-it-yourself” approach while highlighting some of the obstacles that come with the territory. The Academy is online and free\, but advanced registration is required.

Shimm Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law\, and Amy Swearer\, Legal Fellow\, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. \nBruen held that New York’s proper-cause requirement for obtaining an unrestricted license to carry a concealed firearm violated the Fourteenth Amendment because it prevented law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. \nAdmission to the webinar is by registration only.
