Intramural Competition

Fall 2023

Important Dates: The Thacher Intramural Competition will take place on September 29 – October 1, 2023, and the final round will be held at the Arlington Circuit Court on October 6, 2023.

About the Competition:

The Thacher Intramural Competition is an annual competition in which 2L and 3L Scalia Law students compete in a criminal trial problem in teams of two as either the defense or prosecution while being judged by local practitioners and judges. The Thacher Competition provides Scalia Law students the opportunity to grow as advocates, become courtroom-ready attorneys, and make connections with local attorneys and judges. Thacher is also a great opportunity for students who want to compete on an extramural team to show off their skills!

Team Registration:

If you would like to compete in Thacher 2023 and you have already found a teammate, please have one member of your team fill out the application form here: Thacher 2023 Team Application

If you have not already found a teammate, but would like to compete this year, please contact Kiley Gomez at kgomez25@gmu.edu or fill out this form: Thacher Team Partner Match

Registration closes on Friday, September 8, at noon, so don’t wait to sign up!

How to get involved:

Judges: if you are a local practitioner, law school professor, or judge who would like to judge one or more rounds of the Thacher competition, please let us know here: Thacher 2023 Judge Availability

Witnesses: The Thacher competition relies on our GMU community to volunteer as witnesses for the Thacher competition. Although 1Ls cannot compete in Thacher, 1Ls can still get involved by volunteering as a witness for one or more rounds! Witnessing at Thacher is a great opportunity to get exposure to trial advocacy, meet judges, and see the competitors at work. If you are interested in volunteering as a witness, please let us know here: Witness and Bailiff Registration
