Saul Lefkowitz Competition

IPLS would like to congratulate this year’s participants in the Saul Lefokowitz Moot court competition. Our congratulations to all the hard work put in by Stephanie Semler, Nicholas Kalin, Kenny Kuper, Wei Sam Lao, Tyler Whidby, Caelyn Palmer, and Alexander Summerton, in preparing for and competing in the February 11th, 2017 Regional Competition in Decatur, GA. George Mason sent two teams this year.

Our further congratulations to the team of Wei Sam Lao, Tyler Whidby, Caelyn Palmer, and Alexander Summerton for securing First Place and Best Oral Arguments in the regional competition. This is the third year in a row George Mason has won the Regional Competition. They competed the National Competition in Washington, DC on March 18th, 2017 in front of active and retired Trademark Trial and Appeals Board judges.

We thank and congratulate both teams for their hard work!

Finnegan Interview Skills Panel

IPLS’s first event of the semester, the Finnegan Interview Skills Panel, will take place on Thursday, February 9th, from 5:00-6:00pm in Room 332. Panelists will discuss best practice tips for succeeding in interviews, focusing on interviews for jobs in IP. Finnegan, a large IP boutique with offices in D.C. and Northern Virginia, is organizing the panel and will provide food. All are welcome!

IPLS is having its first meeting on Tuesday, September 6 at 5pm in Room 120. We will be talking about some of the great events we have planned for this semester as well as opportunities you can take to be more involved in IP law. Akin Gump Patent Law Talk

Akin Gump, an international general practice law firm, will host a presentation called “The Life Cycle of a Patent” on Tuesday, April 5th from 5:00-6:00 pm in room 120. Patent lawyers from Akin Gump will discuss the “birth” (i.e., prosecution) and “death” (i.e., litigation) of a patent, and how they are related. All are welcome. The Role of the Federal Circuit in Shaping IP Law

IPLS’s biggest event of the semester will feature Federal Circuit Judge Pauline Newman, Federal Circuit Judge Kara Stoll, and IP Professor John Duffy, with Professor Mossoff moderating. The panel will be held on Tuesday, March 15th in Room 225. Dean Butler will begin by saying a few short words at 5:00pm and the panel will run until 6:00pm. Attendees are invited beginning at 4:45pm for refreshments.

Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Regional Competition

Congratulations to IPLS members Jake Mace, Jay York, Rachel Kim, and Alex Summerton for winning 1st Place and Best Brief at the 2016 Southeast Regional Saul Lefkowitz Trademark Moot Court Competition in Atlanta over the weekend. Last year Jake and his teammate Jackie Nguyen won 1stPlace and Best Oral Argument at the same competition, making this the second year in a row that GMU has stolen the spotlight in the Southeast region.

We wish them luck in the final round on March 12th at the Federal Circuit where they will be arguing in front active and retired Trademark Trial and Appeal Board judges.

Landing a Job in Patent Law During Law School & Beyond

IPLS and Sterne Kessler will be hosting a panel to talk about the annual Patent Law Interview Program in Room 121 on Wednesday, February 17 at 5:00pm. The panel includes Sharon Metz, the Senior Legal Recruiting Coordinator at Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, and GMUSL upper class IP students. Food will be provided by Sterne Kessler. Come to learn more about the ins and outs of landing patent jobs!
